Program Eligibility
The Social Housing Program is designed to ensure that safe and secure housing is available to those who could not otherwise afford it. The program is specifically targeted to low-income families, seniors (55 years of age or older) and people with a permanent physical or cognitive disability.
Interested individuals must follow the application process providing the Housing Authority with required income information, including verifiable documentation, provide a signed declaration of household assets, and complete an application interview.
General Eligibility
To be eligible for the Social Housing Program:
- All members of the applicant’s household must be physically and legally in Canada;
- The applicant’s household income must be at or below the Saskatchewan Household Income Maximum (SHIM); and
- The applicant’s household assets must be at or below the established household asset limits
Social Housing Program
The program we deliver is to rent our homes for social rent to people considered to have the greatest housing need. This program is intended to serve households with low incomes; priority is given to seniors (55+), families with children or dependents, individuals with disabilities, and individuals who cohabitate to provide needed support to one or more household members. The rent for a housing unit is based on before-tax household income.. Applicants will be asked to answer some simple questions about their household and circumstances to determine if they are eligible.
Applicants who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the Social Housing Program might be eligible for our other housing programs, including the Senior Housing Program.
Families
Eligibility
Applicants must have a satisfactory rental history, and incomes and assets below established limits. Priority is given to applicants with greatest need based on income, current shelter costs, current housing conditions, health problems aggravated by current housing conditions and/or current housing is unsuiteable because of a disability.
Rent is calculated at 30% of gross monthly adjusted income which is consistent with CHMC National Affordability Standards for housing. Adjusted income refers to the exclusion of some government benefits including but not limited to Canada Child Benefits, family health benefits and GST refunds. For additional information on exclusions that may pertain to your income calculation please contact The Battlefords Housing Authority.
Income and assets limits are based on the number of bedrooms required and if living with a physical or cognitive disability:

Senior Housing Program
The Senior Housing Program provides rental housing to individuals and couples who are 55 years of age or older that are ineligible for the Social Housing Program because of their incomes and assets.
In order to be eligible for this housing households must be physically and legally in Canada and they must be 55 years of age or older.
Rent is a fixed amount that is determined annually by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
Applicants under the Senior Housing Program may only be allocated a unit once all senior applicants for the Social Housing Program have been offered or allocated available units first. Once a Seniors Housing Program tenant receives a unit, the tenant will not be required to move, even if there are eligible senior applicants for the Social Housing Program.
Security deposits are required and depending on the property there may be additional costs such as utilities, parking and excess storage.
For more information on program eligibility, please see the Senior Housing Handbook, or contact us for more details!
